Data Strategy

How to create a successful data product roadmap?

A question I got asked the other day and would like to share my thoughts with you here. Engaging with the business is my number one priority when building a successful product roadmap. By actively listening to the business, you can gain insights into their needs and pain points, and use that information to inform your product development process.

Here are some ways to engage with customers and learn from them:

  1. Conduct customer interviews: Reach out to your business stakeholders and schedule one-on-one interviews to discuss their experience. Ask them about what they want but can’t have atm because no one can provide this analysis. Check what features they would like to see added, and what problems they encounter when using the product (if product is already live).
  2. Host focus groups and feedback sessions: Organise focus groups with your customers to get their input on new features, designs, or concepts. These groups can provide valuable insights into how your business customers perceive your data product and can help you identify potential areas of improvement.
By engaging with the business, you can gain a deeper understanding of their needs and preferences, and use this information to build a product roadmap that is focused on solving their problems and delivering value. It also shows that you value their input and that you are committed to making a product that meets their needs
