Having been a data champion myself as well as having managed global data champion projects across different industries (IT, automotive, FMCG and more), below are my practitioner and academic thoughts:
As organisations increasingly recognise the importance of data in driving business success, it’s becoming clear that a successful data strategy requires more than just technology and infrastructure. It also requires the right people in the right roles. That’s where data champions come in.
Data champions are individuals who are passionate about data and its potential to drive insights and inform decision-making. They are advocates for data-driven approaches and work to ensure that data is being used effectively across the organisation. Without data champions, a data strategy is unlikely to gain traction or achieve its full potential.
But how do organisations identify and cultivate data champions?
One effective approach is through pilot projects. These projects allow organizations to test and refine their data strategy in a smaller, more controlled environment. By involving data champions in these pilot projects, organisations can identify those individuals who are particularly skilled at working with data and who are passionate about its potential.
Once identified, these data champions can then be given more formal roles within the organisation, such as data analysts or data scientists. They can also be involved in training programs to help spread their knowledge and expertise to others within the organization.
In short, data champions and pilot projects are critical components of a successful data strategy. By identifying and cultivating these individuals and using pilot projects to refine their approach, organisations can build a culture that values data and uses it effectively to drive success.
